Revisiting the Jimmy Garoppolo trade: 49ers' big win gets even bigger after Tom Brady moves on from Patriots

By xa1
  • Night net 49ers Patriots American Football 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo saw his rookie season with the Patriots end with him getting his first Super Bowl ring as a backup to Tom Brady. If someone had said then that five years later, Garoppolo would be playing in his first Super Bowl as a starting QB, everyone would have assumed it would be for New England, succeeding Brady.Instead, in a serendipitous twist, at the exact time when Brady's time with the Patriots was ending, it was the 49ers who reaped the benefits of Garoppolo's winning play with a conference title. San Francisco had multiple chances to go in a different direction at quarterback. New England could have either kept Garoppolo stashed for Bill Belichick or found another trade partner.Let's revisit the events that led to the 49ers acquiring Garoppolo for a 2018 second-round draft pick on Halloween 2017 and the fallout of the trade that pushed the team to play for a champonship only two-plus years later. NLCS Game 6: Must-see story lines with Dodgers-Cardinals series on the line

    By xa1
  • Here's a radical idea. Let's stop talking about this insane, blown-way-out-of-proportion nonsense about the St. Louis Cardinals way (painted as stodgy guardians) vs. the Los Angeles Dodgers way (painted as the fun-loving, devil-may-care team). Both caricatures are only loosely rooted in truth. And this garbage about some vast gap between the fans in St. Louis and the fans in Los Angeles? Baloney. This is true lowest common denominator stuff here, folks. Tonight is Game 6. Tonight, we're going to be treated to an incredible pitching matchup between L.A. ace Clayton Kershaw, who has a 0.47 ERA in the playoffs, and St. Louis rookie Michael Wacha, who has a 0.64 ERA in October.MORE: First pitch 8:37 ET | Mouse ears issue | ALCS goes to Game 6 Isn't that enough? It definitely should be, but here are six other legitimate storylines for Game 6 tonight at Busch Stadium.1. What will the Dodgers get out of their banged-up stars? Hanley Ramirez is hampered by the rib injury from being drilled by a Joe Kelly fastball in Game 1, and Andre Ethier's ankle isn't 100 percent. Ethier is hitting .176 in the series and his range in center field is painfully limited. If Ramirez, especially, has been significantly helped by the day off, health-wise, that's a huge boost for the Dodgers. He hit .345 in the regular season and .500 in the NLDS against the Braves — with six extra-base hits and six RBIs in those four games — but is batting .167 with a pair of singles against the Cardinals.2. World Series journal: Baseball's long winter almost here

    By xa1
  • BOSTON — It was only for a brief moment, and I was much more focused on the road in a driving rainstorm at not quite 6 in the morning, but I saw it clearly enough, and I know what I saw.The giant Kansas City Royals logo, shrouded in darkness and rain and maybe a little hail, was most definitely the back of the scoreboard of Kauffman Stadium. Just another ballpark gone quiet for the winter. There are 29 of them now, including the one I left about five hours earlier, Busch Stadium in St. Louis. WORLD SERIES 2013: Best images from the Fall Classic | Game 6 previewThere is definitely one game left, maybe two, in baseball in 2013, with Fenway Park the scene for the conclusion of the World Series. The ballparks won't all be left empty in the winter, because this is 2013, and will be 2014, and in most places, they just don't do empty for the winter anymore, because somewhere along the line there was a discovery that you could use a baseball stadium more than 81 days out of the year, plus playoffs. That discovery was longer ago than it might seem, and the best reminder of that is in Oakland, where the Raiders will play into December at the home of the A's. There still are CFL games to play in Toronto, and a monster truck rally there, too. College football has some bowl games in baseball parks. Hockey games have become a semi-regular feature, and this winter that will even include Dodger Stadium. In Texas, they had a food truck festival last weekend, and a Christian music[......]

Go time: Pirates prospect Gregory Polanco bound for bigs

    By xa1
  • The Pirates couldn't wait any longer: Gregory Polanco is coming to the Show.Pittsburgh announced that it will call up their top prospect Tuesday. T夜网论坛hey needed to make a move after placing second baseman Neil Walker (appendectomy) on the disabled list Monday night. If the Bucs wanted to keep it on the down low, well, Polanco foiled those plans. The wait is over.... My dream has officially come true ⚾️ Pittsburgh, see you mañana!!— Gregory Polanco ☕️ (@El_Coffee) June 10, 2014Fans have been clamoring for Polanco, 22, to get the call. He has been pounding Triple-A pitching (.347/405/.540 through Sunday). Many skeptics believe the Bucs kept Polanco in the minors so he would not earn enough service time to qualify for a fourth season of arbitration eligibility. Pirates management swore that wasn't the case. (Source: Pittsburgh Tribune-Review)[......]
